Reflective Commentary: Instagram Carousel

Reflective Commentary- Fast Fashion and Fake News

Introduced in 2015, Instagram carousel posts allow users to share a more complete picture of experiences in its classic feed format rather than on the stories function. Furthermore, the function can be used by accounts to share more information in a visually appealing format. For my carousel post I took inspiration from posts by @fairfashionproject. Her posts use harmonious colours in unison with clear, informative writing. Her posts utilise icons and design assets (such as a branded logo on each post) to visually appeal.

The topic I chose was the relationship between Fast Fashion and Fake News. Writing the title as an unanswered equation, I used this to tease the audience so that they would be more intrigued to read on as I relied heavily on text. Realising this, the font used resembled the style that typically would be seen on a newspaper (Playfair Display Regular), written in a fresh pink colour (#FF7E78) that I found by using the eyedropper tool from a newspaper image. Our brains seek to find visual completion so I used the ‘flip’ tool on Adobe Spark to use the newspaper image over two slides to achieve a full picture when swiping through: improving the cohesion and professionalism of my post. Later, I repeated this affect in order to make my post circular and complete. Being 9 slides long, I wanted to make sure to add vibrancy in the lettering throughout the middle posts to maintain the engagement of my audience. Utilising the white space, I used speech bubbles and lightening bolt icons, found in Adobe Spark, to separate information.

I posted the carousel to my Second-hand Fashion Instagram account. Feedback has been positive, praising the concept and aesthetic of the post. However, to improve I would focus more on the length of my post. Going forward I would’ve spent time evaluating the hierarchical value of the text to keep the audience’s attention.
