Reflective Commentary: Playable App Prototype
Reflective Commentary- Secondhand StopShop:
Creating app prototypes is an effective way to plan concept ideas in an interactive way. Using Marvel, creating playable prototypes is both straightforward and cost-effective. Brands can utilise this tool to create basic, functioning apps for experiences such as sales or promotion. Apps such as the BOF magazine use basic functions such as the scrollbar paired with visuals to engage the user whilst remaining simplistic.
For the concept of my app prototype, I wanted to create an accessible tool that provided key information regarding local second-hand shops to people who may be new to the Slow Fashion community. By displaying all key information about local shops, collected by other users (such as Specialities and Donations), I believed that it would make the transition from first-hand buying to second-hand buying easier for many people. With the theme of ease, I decided to keep the functions basic on the app (such as back-arrows) as well as use recurring imagery. Using the image of the earth throughout reminds the users of the environmental importance of making the choice to shop second-hand, as well as adding colour.
The most successful feature of the app is the ‘community’ section where like-minded individuals could discuss and connect over the shared interest of second-hand shopping. By sharing purchases and comments in a visual way, it improves the graphics of the app as well as engaging users. Despite this, to improve I would’ve liked to improve the professionalism of the app by creating logos, specific fonts and adding imagery, all without sacrificing the functions simplicity. Feedback has been positive, praising the concept holistically. However, it can be said that functions of the app already exist in popular apps such as Google or Facebook. Despite this, I believe that my playable app prototype aims to incorporate the key features of each app and condenses the information into a clear format.
